Victorian decorating is one of the most popular decorating styles. Victorian interior design represent the era of eclecticism, ornamentation and excess makes for some intriguing discoveries. Victorian interiors feature beautiful colors, lots of ornate details, and skilled fakery to make the home a welcoming and beautiful place. Victorian-style decorating appears to have been exclusive to the wealthy, with lavish textiles and exotic furnishings.

Color, Floor, Fabric, Furniture, accessories in Victorian interior decoration:

Color: In Victorian interior decoration Color schemes is dark and intense. Victorian interior design should have rich dark colors of burgundy, plum, ruby, emerald, forest greens and navy will work well. You can tone in gold to give your look that edge of indulgence. Color should be 'muted', 'toned-down' or old-fashioned look instead. Wallpaper designs of the day featured large patterns of flowers, birds or feathers. Colors were often grayed by adding the complementary or opposite color.

Flooring:  Floors in Victorian homes were made of hardwood and were covered with Oriental rugs or large pattern area rugs. Wood was the common flooring across most of the social spectrum of the Victorian era. To add warmth to a hard-floored room, Victorians covered their floors with detailed rugs. Several smaller or midsized rugs might have filled a room. One larger rug spanning from wall to wall anchored a room, added color throughout, and created the experience of modern-day wall-to-wall carpet.

Fabric: Heavily patterned fabric was prominent in a Victorian home. Ideal fabrics for curtains, or upholstery, are very opulent fabrics - velvet, damask, brocade, and heavily embroidered fabrics. Pillows and upholstered furniture were often trimmed with braid and tassels.

Furniture: Furniture of the Victorian era was large in scale and ornamentation was seen in carved scrolls, leaves flowers and grapes. Woods were oak, mahogany, rosewood and black walnut. Victorian furnishings were commonly heavy and intricately carved dark wood. Choose an antique sofa and chairs for a living room space, perhaps even a chaise, often called a fainting couch.

Accessories: Victorian rooms usually contained potted ferns or palms, ornate silver photograph frames and decorative items made of ivory, tortoiseshell or glass. Tiffany lamps from that period look amazing and would add a splash of color into your room. Frame your pictures in large, decorative frames, with a touch of gilt, to get that really authentic look. Old-fashioned paintings or prints like oil paintings, and paintings of pretty, young maidens, or sweet, innocent children and puppies are used in Victorian home decor.

Transitional style is often described as a balanced blend of traditional and contemporary furnishings and decor. Transitional style is simple, warm it feels both fresh and timeless. Transitional style home decor can be defined as the new classic. This style features classic lines mixed with fresh modern touches. Transitional Interior Design combines the simplistic, neutral approach of a Contemporary design style with the classy and refined feel of a Traditional Interior Design.

Transitional style is a merging of traditional and contemporary furniture, finishes, materials, and fabrics, equating to a classic, timeless design. Transitional decorating embraces soft lines and comfortable furnishings. Here are some characteristics of a Transitional style:

Color- Transitional style used mono-tone which is a direct result of the inherited Contemporary Design Style. Color in transitional style is to keep it clean, neutral and serene. In the transitional style color palate are balances taupe, tans, creams and browns. This simple color scheme is relaxing and uncomplicated.

Flooring- Flooring is kept neutral as well, with the use of soft colored carpets or wood floors in warm tones. A rug can be an expression of your personal style, something that should be reflected for your own personal enjoyment and for guests in your home. Texture in the carpets or rugs is important; you can use one tone cotton rug and zigzag rugs. The neutral colors and muted tones help to create a soothing and lighter feel to a space, evoking a mood of relaxation.

Furniture- Transitional furniture takes classic furniture pieces and mixes in contemporary materials, fabrics and finishes while softening the formal details and ornament of formal furniture and décor. Transitional furniture tends to be more comfort oriented than pure contemporary, with ample scaled pieces and overstuffed seating that maintain clean lines.

Fabric- The lack of color makes room for interesting textures, such as the smooth cream color found on the sofa and the smooth chenille used on the side chair. Other good choices for a transitional space are soft ultra suede, leathers and chenille, intended to maximize their presence.

Accessories –Accessories are also important part of the home decor. Mirror, glass and metallic furnishings are can be used in transitional style decor. Accent pieces and accessories, items like glass tables and metallic accents add lightness and elegance. Two-toned artwork, set off by a dark bordering frame also work nicely. Adding some graphical wallpaper creates a transitional space.
This style is about simplicity uniting with elegance. Curves combined with straight lines in a transitional style interior to deliver a look that balances both masculine and feminine attributes for a comfortable, contemporary design. Transitional will often use contemporary furnishings mixed with antiques, but even these old-world pieces will be sophisticated and have simple, classic lines.
