Dabu is a mud-resist hand-block printing practiced primarily in Rajasthan. In the making of these printed fabrics, there is a string of manual process and hard work involved to achieve the end result. This method of printing uses lots of natural dyes and vegetable pastes, making it environmentally non-toxic.

The Dabu prints are created by hiding them from dye, by applying a resist. Dabu prints are characterized by circular designs, as well as linear and floral patterns. The colors are picked carefully each has a separate significance. The wooden blocks that are used are made of teak wood. 

 

The process begins with the mixing of a special type of clay paste called dabu.  A design is then sketched onto the background cloth and this design is covered with the special clay with the help of wooden blocks, after which saw dust is sprinkled. Thereafter, the entire cloth is dyed in select colors. The area where clay and sawdust mixture is present does not catch the dye and remains colorless. After dyeing and drying, the cloth is washed to remove the clay and the mixture. For additional color, this cloth is dyed again in a lighter shade to cover the patterned area.
